Zelmo "Big Z" Beaty was an American basketball player. He played eight seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and four in the rival American Basketball Association (ABA). In 2016, he was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He was earlier selected to the ABA All-Time Team. Beaty excelled in both high school and college basketball before being selected as a first round draft pick by the St. Louis Hawks in the 1962 NBA draft, with the third overall pick. He was a member of the NBA's inaugural All-Rookie Team in 1963. He was a two-time NBA All-Star in seven years with the Hawks, and averaged double-doubles for six consecutive seasons after his rookie year. The Hawks went to the NBA playoffs every season he was on the team.
