Example obituary wording for a mother or father

The obituary of a mother or father is probably the hardest one to write. These examples can serve as a base; change them, trim them, and make them yours.

Classic in tone

“Margaret Wilson passed away peacefully on 12th May at the age of 84, surrounded by the love of her family. Her children, grandchildren and wider family thank everyone for their kind messages of sympathy, and announce that the service will be held on Thursday at 12 noon at St John's Church.”

Personal in tone

“Mum has left us. She went the way she lived: quietly, and looking after everyone else. We are left with her recipes written out by hand, her way of buttoning our coats even when it wasn't cold, and the certainty of having felt loved every single day. Thank you to everyone who cared for her and loved her.”

For a father

“Our father, Frank, taught us how to fix a plug, how to lose at dominoes gracefully, and never to leave anyone behind. Today we say goodbye with more gratitude than sadness. Anyone who would like to join us will be welcome on Saturday at 11 o'clock at the Seafront Chapel.”

Tips for adapting them

• Add a detail only their family would know: that's what turns an obituary into a portrait.
• If there are several of you, write it together: each sibling remembers different things.
• Don't rush to cut it down. An online obituary doesn't charge by the word, and their story deserves all the space it needs.
